On the 17th of April 2012, Anders B. Breivik gave a speech to the Oslo district court in which he outlined his deeds, stated his affinity with Al-Qaeda, the Swiss minaret ban, and the NSU, and sketched out his theory of the downfall of Europe due to immigration and multiculturalism. Although Breivik’s speech was not broadcast and closed to the public, in Milo Rau’s Breivik’s Explanation, German-Turkish actress Sascha Ö. Soydan performs as Breivik, using material reconstructed from the notes of a Norwegian journalist present at the trial. Swiss director Rau has become of the most well-known proponents of documentary theatre, and alongside Explanation will also guide interested guests on an excursion through the Basel criminal court.
