The work of French choreographer Rachid Ouramdane is occupied with the artistic exploration of identity – particularly his own and his parents’ – and exists in the space between dance and documentary. During a three-month trip around Vietnam, it became clear to Ouramdane – the son of an Algerian who served in the French army in Indochina – that he was being treated as the son of a coloniser. Using footage and interviews shot by videographer Aldo Lee, Far Away… is an unusual self-portrait that attempts to located the subject’s identity in the fraught context of post-colonial realities.
